A PORTRAIT OF OUR TOWN

Rhyl might no longer be the seaside resort it used to be, but it remains a town characterised by its warmth, resilience, and strong community spirit. For many, no matter where life takes them, Rhyl is and always will be home.

Too often, the media overlooks the positive stories and lived experiences of the people of Rhyl, and social media trolls focus on superficial or negative portrayals. They fail to recognise the impact such representations can have on the town and its residents.

“Only people from Rhyl have the right to say what they do and don't like about the town!”

‘Rhyl People’ aims to provide a counter-narrative — one that focuses on the voices, faces, and perspectives of the community itself. Each participant in the project is invited to sit for a portrait and receives a free printed photograph to take home. These images help build an expanding archive and a collective portrait of Rhyl.

But the project isn’t just visual. It is also about listening. Each participant is asked the same three questions: What do you like about Rhyl? What do you dislike about Rhyl? What’s needed to make Rhyl better? These responses, alongside the portraits, give the community a visible voice.
